Talk about a burning desire to nail one’s butt to any cross

Do US Presbyterians really believe that Jesus would have met with Hezbollah and then praised them? I admit that I am ignorant of the differences between the various protestant Christian denominations, but that being said, why did the US Presbyterians actively seek to meet with leaders of a terrorist organization? I can’t make up my mind if they are being willfully ignorant or just in denial of Hezbollah’s long tortured history of “interfaith” relations with Christians in Lebanon? Somehow I don’t think this falls under the “rending unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s” but I have to ask; who will they seek out to meet and praise next?

Kateland, the actions of the leadership of the PCUSA has little to do with either the beliefs of the average Presbyterian or of broader Christianity - Protestant or otherwise. The exception to this statement would be the National Council of Churches, to whom this action would make perfect sense. You will find their actions, more often than not, are a mystery to the Presbyterian that sits in the pew on Sunday. What is a mystery to many of the rest of us is how these people maintain their positions. It won't be a surprise to see a split in the PCUSA over things like this.

I agree there does seem to be a great disconnect between the leadership of some of these religious organizations and the lay people. Yesterday, I posted on the Presbyterian leadership but it could just as easily been the Anglicans or the United Church.

I am not sure why that is but it just seems to be the leadership seems to be lacking common sense when dealing with these terrorist groups.

Hizbollah has often been hailed as an social and charitble organization - as if that justifies its long and brutal history, and while its true that a certain amount of largess under the guise of charity and social programs is provided by the organization, the true irony is that once you leave areas in Lebanon under Hizbollah's control, you see prosperity and modernity, and a relatively well educated population rather than bone grinding poverty and decay. In these areas it was not always that way but as long as Hizbollah controls them they will remain that way.
