If its not the water, could it be the air?

I am starting to believe there is something strange in the water at the US State Department which is the only possible rational explanation for the break with reality the US Secretary of State has been experiencing lately:
An elected Hamas government in the Palestinian territories may be preferable to the group operating outside the power structure and carrying out terrorist actions, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Monday.

Rice, speaking to a pro-democracy forum, made the point in arguing that that the United States should not retreat from its advocacy of democracy abroad when elections do not turn out well from the US point of view. Referring to Hamas, Rice said, "I am not so sure that it is better to have these groups running the streets, masked, with guns rather than having them have to face voters and having to deliver."

Firstly, Hamas has never stopped running around as masked gunmen (see this post for a copy of their daily bulletin) and so far it looks like with the full support and approval of the Palestinian electorate. I wonder if it makes a difference now that Hamas’ military wing is calling out for attacks to be launched against Americans?

Kate, it makes no difference.

First, Condi Rice is the US' biggest example of, and argument against, affirmative action.

Second, she's too damn stupid to see that every time Hamas shoots at Israel, or insults/threatens the US, they just get more popular with the paly public.

And finally, the State Dept has always had its collective head up its collective butt no matter who's at the top.

I'm very anti-affirmative action personally though I am not below advising my children to take personal advantage of every opportunity that comes their way either. Having said that, I don't believe Condi Rice can possibly be that stupid. Frankly, I think she's a very sharp cookie but why has she suddenly gone so plumb flat-out dumb?

Not only has she gone dumb, but she suddenly is saying things that anyone with eyes and a cable tv knows is utterly untrue. So what gives - I suspect there is something nefarious a foot and would could muse that American public is being prepared with a complete policy reversal - as in 360 degree turn..

It was like that between all kinds of enemies of all times: as soon as one gives in a tiny bit, the other side strikes harder. It's like being bitten by a bull dog: as soon as you stop fighting, he will chew more of your flesh.
