Rush for Sacrificial Sheep Triggers Price War
Thousands of people flocked to the sprawling sheep market and thus began a price war among the sellers.
Oh no. A price war. How are the poor sellers to make a living?
Some Saudi women were present in cars as their men haggled over prices.
Ahh, by gouging the men. Just imagine the price war if they'd let the ladies do the haggling.
There was no sign of veterinary inspectors from the Ministry of Agriculture to check the health of the animals.
Uh-oh. I don't like where this is going.
Asked what would happen if any animal were found to be infected, one vendor said it would be sold at a discount to an unwary customer.
Just as I thought. You'd never get away with such things if the men hadn't left their wives in the car.
Bangladeshis and Pakistanis standing outside the municipal slaughterhouse near the sheep market had a busy time. Armed with sharp knives, they approached buyers of sheep and offered their services — in this case, slaughtering, skinning and bagging the animal for a fee of SR100.
And that's quite the bargain rate, consider one side is negotiating with sharp knives and all the other guy's got is a sheep. Hardly a fair negotiating position.
But I have to thank Jaeger for another tip. The Arab News (English Edition). There is something about this headline that cracked me right up:
“Orderly stoning at Jamrat”
It’s good to see that the Saudi authorities have progressed to the point where they can boast to have mastered the art of an orderly stoning after umpteenth disorderly ones…..
