How ironic that the Ontario Conservative party has now elected John Tory, a "left-of-centre" Tory to lead them against the ruling provincial liberal party; when it was a "right-of-center" Tory who won 2 back-to-back majority terms for the Ontario Conservative Party and a "left-of-centre" Tory who lost that majority to the Liberal party in the first place.

I won't be too quick to judge, we should give the guy a chance. Flaherty would have scared people away.
Ironic, idiotic, both work. Choosing a party leader based on their presumed 'electability' reflects cynicism and a lack of imagination, not to mention that, as you allude, it doesn't work.
See:
Kerry, John Forbes
Day, Stockwell
Macbeth, Nancy
etc. etc. ad nauseam
