There are many wonderful emergency aid organizations operating or preparing to be operational in the wake of devastation that Hurricane Katrina has wrought. If I had to pick my top two favorites, I would have to name Catholic Charities and the Salvation Army.
Both organizations are well known for the quality of their emergency relief efforts but what garners praise from someone like me is that these organizations consistently keep slogging away long after the short-term needs of the victims have been met. When the National Guard and FEMA have packed up and gone home, the citizen/victims of the Hurricane Katrina will still need a great deal of help as they struggle to put their lives in order again. And you can count on finding the volunteers of these organizations to be on the ground delivering whatever is needed along with a kind word or even a shoulder to cry on; instead of sitting in an ivory tower planning session.
Those are my two personal favourites, but The Truth Laid Bear and Instapundit are both keeping track of other aid organizations that you might prefer to support. Please don’t hesitate to give.
